We teach maths very practically in FS/Y1. We believe children need hands on experience and need to be 'doing' in order to learn something throughly. Children need to be fluent with their tables and number bonds. Children should be able to count in 2's, 5's and 10's and know their number bonds to 10 and 20. They love to learn number through exercise videos and this has really improved their counting this year.

Making Memories :)

Outdoor Learning

At Christ the King we value the importance of outdoor learning. There are lot's of opportunities to take our learning outside and enjoy many different activities and topics. Our children love to get messy and to experience different textures. We enjoy visiting our forest area and using our new outdoor learning space.

In FS2 our main homework is reading. Children get their book changed a couple of times a week when the child is ready.

In Year 1 children have a home/school reading book change a couple of times a week. They also have a literacy and numeracy homework given out on a Wednesday and returned the following Tuesday. They have a spelling test on a Tuesday.

Each week we have a different book of the week which the majority of our work is set around. We cover a range of texts and genres, this year so far books have included Stick Man, Mr Wolf's Pancakes, Dear Zoo and Room on the Broom. We recently read Oliver's vegetables. We investigated the case of the missing carrots, made wanted posters and made vegetable soup. In the summer term we look forward to exploring dinosaurs, pirates and the seaside.

National Book week.

We had great fun during National Book Week. We had a dressing up day so we could come to school as our favourite book character. We had The Hulk, Princess Mirrorbelle, Where's Wally and Happy from Snow White to name a few. We did a class book swap where we swapped a book we had finished reading with a friend. We had a visit from the book fair to buy some nice new books and we also had a visit from Year 3 who came to share some books with us. Darcie-Grace won the competition to draw your favourite book cover. She drew a wonderful picture of Room on the Broom and won £5 to spend at the book fair.
