Welcome to Year 5S...

I hope you have all had a lovely summer break and are feeling refreshed and ready for another academic year!  I am really looking forward to teaching Year 5 alongside Miss Martindale this year as I’m sure we will have great fun together.

As Year 5 is the beginning of Upper KS2 for your children and the year before SATs, it is important that you understand the significance of this year.  Year 5 children will be challenged and expected to work hard to reach their full potential across the curriculum.  Independence is thoroughly encouraged at this stage in Primary School to ensure transition to Secondary Education is as smooth as possible.

How can you help?
Please can you ensure that you read at least four times a week with your children at home and sign their reading journal. This can be at any time of the day, ideally for around 10 minutes at a time.  As you read, check your child’s understanding of the text by asking them some questions. For example you could ask, ‘How do you know this character is angry?’ or ‘What does this word mean?’ or ‘Can you find me a word that means the same as…’ or ‘How does this story make you feel and why?’

Spellings and times tables practice at home is also vital to ensure your children are succeeding in their weekly class tests (spelling books will be sent home to be signed each week.)  Please encourage your children to practice their spellings out loud AND in written form – giving them little tests is also a great help.

PE kits must be in school at all times during the school year (white polo shirt, red shorts, trainers and tracksuit for outdoors.)  Please encourage your children to take responsibility for their PE kit as again this will help them greatly when they transition to Secondary School.
Can I please ask that ALL uniform is clearly labelled with your child’s name and year group. This really helps us if any uniform gets lost or misplaced as we can then return it to the correct owner quickly.

Click here to view a copy of our yearly overview of the curriculum; but as always it is subject to a few changes as time passes.

If you have any questions for us, please come and have a chat at the end of the day.

Many thanks,
Miss Small
