We are Year 1C

Year 1 brightening up Harvest on CAFOD Family Fast Day

Welcome to Year 1

We are always learning lots of new and exciting things in Year 1.  We aim to provide a happy and stimulating learning environment for the children, and to encourage them to be the best they can be by being actively involved in a wide variety of learning opportunities inside and outside the classroom. We want the children to happy, enthusiastic and independent learners.

The teachings of Jesus are central to all that we do - we seek to encourage the children to love God and to love one another, and to follow our school motto - 'Christ be our light and our guide'.

It is a privilege to be walking alongside the children on their learning journey.  We want to do the very best we can for each one of them and to support you, as parents and carers, in any way that we can.

Mrs Carson, Mrs Shaw and Mrs Stephenson

Our Class routines

Each morning, we open the doors at 8.45 am to give parents the opportunity to come into class and read with their child until 9 am.

Spellings - the children are given spelllings and a dictation sentence to learn each Wednesday and they will have a spelling test the following Tuesday - please can you make sure your child brings in their spelling book each Tuesday.

Homework - homework is given out each Wednesday and should be completed and returned to class by the following Monday.  From time to time, we will also give the children some homework challenges linked to the topics currently being taught.

Reading Books - We want all of the children to have a love of reading and for them to enjoy reading for pleasure. Listening to your child read on a daily basis is so important - even for ten minutes.  Your child will bring home books from our Oxford Reading Tree scheme plus a weekly free choice book that they select themselves.  Please remember to sign the Home Reading Record each time you read with your child, and also ensure that your child brings their reading book and record each day.

PE -  P.E. day is Monday.  Our school P.E. comprises white t-shirt, red shorts and black plimsolls.  Please ensure that your child brings in their p.e. kit and places it on their coat peg.

Wellies - It would be very useful if your child could bring in a pair of wellies to keep in school for our outdoor activities.

Our Class Prayers

To love and work each day for you.
Amen

Bless the food we eat today.
Bless the hands that make the food.
   Bless us O Lord, Amen.

Grace After Meals

Thank you God for the food we have eaten.
Thank for God for all our friends.

Spring Term

One World Week - Our Spring term began with a One World Week in school and Year 1 learned lots about Italy. The children enjoyed making and tasting pizza. They learned lots of facts about Italy and produced some fantastic art based on Michelangelo's Mona Lisa and famous Italian landmarks.  There was also a great model made of Mount Vesuvius by one of the children.
